a preview performance
June 13th at 8PM | La Mama Downstairs (66 E 4th Street, New York, NY 10003)
CONSTRUCTION is a collaboration between Susan Marshall & Company and Sō Percussion. In it, music and dance are two separate systems that coexist in a symbiotic and, at times, conflicted relationship. The four percussionists' instruments are unconventionally employed microphones and amplifiers that play according to a shifting visual score that determines both the music and the musicians' trajectories through space. Three dancers, driven by a different set of choreographic rules, vie for space with the musicians.

Dancing with and around Neurological Motor Challenges – an Interdisciplinary Working Group
“Dancing with and around Neurological Motor Challenges – an Interdisciplinary Working Group,” is a new collaboration with engineer Naomi Leonard, neuroscientist Sabine Kastner, and performance historian Brian Herrera. The group’s aim is to create tools or environments that are useful to people whose neurology makes motor tasks – and daily life - difficult. The working group convened for the first time during August 2018 for a two-day conversation with a group of neuro-divergent adults with motor, attention and regulation challenges. A number of projects are in development and will culminate with a conference to be scheduled in the spring.
New collaboration with sculptor Martha Friedman
This year, Marshall and sculptor Martha Friedman will embark on their second collaboration. Marshall and Friedman previously worked together to create Two Person Operating System, which premiered at NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts in November 2016, followed by a second round of performances at the Andrea Rosen Gallery in Chelsea.
PROTOTYPES was performed June 27th and June 28th, 2018 at La Mama Downstairs

With lighting by Eric Southern and Cheyenne Sykes, sound design by Matt Evans, and costumes by Kasia Walicka Maimone.
